Facing the Green-Eyed Monster (Part 1: Naming the Monster)

This is the beginning of a five‑part mini‑series on envy, the green‑eyed monster we all know but rarely admit to. Over the coming weeks, we’ll explore what envy really is, how it shows up in our lives, the damage it can cause, and most importantly, how we can transform it into something constructive. Each part will close with a “Food for Thought” reflection and a preview of what’s coming next, so you can walk this journey step by step.

Envy is that quiet resentment when someone else has what we long for. It’s the sting when your neighbour drives home a new car you’ve been saving for, when a friend effortlessly gets pregnant after you’ve struggled for years, or when your colleague is favoured for promotion while your hard work goes unnoticed.

We smile on the outside, but envy gnaws at us inside. Unlike anger or lust, which carry fleeting pleasures before consequences arrive, envy offers no sweetness at all, only pain. To face it, we must first name it.

Food for Thought: What is one moment in your life when envy whispered in your ear? Did you acknowledge it, or bury it?

Next Week: We’ll explore the two faces of envy, how it can either build or break us.
