A Roaring Lion Kills No Game Part 2: (The Psychology of Premature Reward)

Why your brain loves unfinished victories

Welcome to Part 2 of the 5-part mini-series, A Roaring Lion Kills No Game. In Part 1, we explored how talking about our ambitions can create the illusion of progress. In this part, we’ll look deeper into the psychology behind that phenomenon and discover why our brains often reward us before we’ve earned the result. As we continue this journey, we’ll uncover why silent execution, disciplined systems, and consistent action are the true drivers of success.

Modern psychology explains something our ancestors understood instinctively…

When we publicly declare a goal, our brain often gives us an emotional reward before we’ve completed any meaningful work.

It feels good to say:

  • “I’m writing a book.”
  • “I’m launching a business.”
  • “I’m getting into the best shape of my life.”

That feeling creates a dangerous illusion.

The brain begins treating the identity as partially achieved. Instead of earning confidence through action, we borrow confidence from conversation.

This is why some people spend months talking about plans while making little progress.

Every conversation becomes a substitute for execution.

The disciplined person understands a simple truth: Progress creates confidence. Talk only creates comfort.

One is earned.

The other is borrowed.

Food for Thought

A goal discussed a hundred times is still just a goal.

A goal acted on becomes reality.
