When Envy Builds or Breaks

Envy isn’t always destructive. Sometimes, it fuels justice. Other times, it corrodes the soul.

Envy has two faces: positive and negative.

Positive envy can spark change. History is full of movements born from resentment of injustice, oppressed people rising against the powerful, demanding fairness.

Apartheid’s downfall, for example, was fueled by the envy of the majority denied rights by a privileged minority. That envy became a force for justice.

Negative envy, however, corrodes the soul. It breeds bitterness, isolation, and disappointment. Bertrand Russell once wrote, “Envy is one of the most potent causes of unhappiness.” Left unchecked, it turns us into shadows of ourselves, consumed by comparison and dissatisfaction.

Food for Thought: Which face of envy are you feeding today, the one that drives growth, or the one that drains joy?

Next Week: We’ll dig into why we envy, the roots of comparison in society, social media, and ourselves.
