When Fundamentals No Longer Hold Sway

What happens to financial markets when the technology of finance evolves faster than the frameworks used to understand value?

Financial markets have moved a long way from the traditional exchange floor and balance-sheet-driven investment model. Today, traditional finance (TradFi), fintech, decentralised finance (DeFi), tokenisation and real-world assets (RWAs) are increasingly converging.

The boundaries are becoming less obvious.

Banks are becoming technology companies. Fintechs are becoming financial institutions. Traditional assets are being tokenised. Blockchain is moving beyond cryptocurrencies into settlement, ownership and financial infrastructure.

The question is no longer whether these worlds will interact.

It is how deeply they will integrate.

TradFi brings regulation, institutional capital, governance and established financial infrastructure.

Fintech brings speed, accessibility, automation and data-driven decision-making.

DeFi introduces programmable finance, open protocols, and new models of financial intermediation.

RWAs attempt to connect the digital economy with tangible economic assets, bonds, property, commodities, credit, and other instruments that traditionally existed within conventional financial systems.

The convergence could fundamentally change how capital is raised, traded, settled, and owned.

But there is a deeper challenge.

What Happens When Fundamentals Lose Their Dominance?

Financial markets have traditionally relied on fundamentals: earnings, cash flows, credit quality, interest rates, economic growth, asset values, and risk.

Yet technology has introduced another force: network effects, liquidity, sentiment, accessibility, and speed.

An asset can attract enormous attention before its underlying economics are fully understood. Prices can move because of narratives, communities, algorithms, or expectations of future adoption.

This does not make fundamentals irrelevant, but rather it makes them one part of a much larger price-discovery mechanism.

The market of the future may therefore be one where fundamentals determine long-term value, while technology increasingly determines how quickly that value is discovered, distributed and repriced.

Where Are We Heading?

Perhaps towards a financial system where the distinction between bank, fintech, exchange, blockchain and asset manager becomes increasingly blurred.

A bond could be issued, tokenised, settled and traded digitally in split seconds.

A real-world asset could become accessible to a much broader investor base.

Payments could become instantaneous.

Financial products could become programmable, and capital could move across platforms with fewer traditional intermediaries.

The opportunity is enormous, so is the risk.

Greater accessibility can democratise finance, but it can also democratise speculation. Faster settlement can improve efficiency, but faster markets can amplify mistakes. Tokenisation can broaden ownership, but digitising an asset does not eliminate the underlying credit, liquidity, legal or valuation risks.

Technology can change the wrapper. It cannot repeal economics.

A tokenised bond is still exposed to the issuer’s creditworthiness. A digital property interest still depends on the underlying asset. A sophisticated trading platform cannot make an unsound investment fundamentally sound.

This may ultimately be the most important principle for the next generation of financial markets: Innovation can transform the architecture of finance, but fundamentals remain the anchor of sustainable value.

The future may not belong entirely to TradFi, fintech or DeFi.

It may belong to the integration of all three, supported by technology but disciplined by economics, regulation, risk management and trust.

The financial market is evolving from a system that digitises transactions into one that increasingly digitises ownership, access and value itself. The question is not whether finance will change, but whether our understanding of value can evolve with it.
