Period: August 19–26, 2026
The period highlighted a sharp divergence across digital assets. Improving liquidity expectations, institutional demand, and stronger risk appetite propelled major assets higher, while security vulnerabilities across DeFi and Layer-1 infrastructure highlighted persistent structural risks.
Bitcoin (BTC) rallied approximately 22.9% over seven days, briefly testing the $80,000 psychological threshold before consolidating around $79,000. Ethereum (ETH) gained more than 29%, supported by corporate treasury accumulation, particularly by BitMine, and improving macro liquidity conditions. Meanwhile, DeFi experienced heightened volatility following security incidents affecting Cosmos EVM infrastructure and an oracle-related liquidation event involving Morpho and Pendle.
The central theme is therefore stronger institutional adoption alongside persistent infrastructure risk.
U.S. Treasury liquidity: Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent increased the maximum size of Treasury buybacks to approximately $4 billion, while the Treasury’s roughly $935 billion cash balance reinforced expectations of improved system liquidity. Although the market initially interpreted the development as strongly liquidity-positive, subsequent comments suggested no immediate expansion beyond the existing programme.
Institutional flows: U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) maintained strong demand, with a sustained inflow streak during the rally. Institutional participation was further reinforced by progress in tokenized deposits and regulated digital-asset investment products.
These developments reinforce the growing role of corporate balance sheets in crypto-market demand.
Asset | Approx. Price | 7-Day Performance | Driver |

A major security incident affecting the Cosmos EVM module forced several networks to halt operations while patches were deployed. KiiChain reported the loss of approximately 148 million KII across exploit transactions, while TAC also experienced a significant exploit. MANTRA subsequently resumed operations following deployment of patched software. However, the incident sparked intense industry backlash against Cosmos Labs for quietly pushing the GitHub patch without a public security advisory, leaving these specific networks blind and exposed to the exploits.
The incident highlights the systemic risk associated with shared blockchain infrastructure: a vulnerability in a common software layer can create correlated exposure across otherwise independent networks.
A relatively thin Pendle reUSD pool was involved in a sequence of transactions that triggered approximately $36 million in automated liquidations across Morpho positions. No bad debt was reportedly realized.
The episode nevertheless exposed an important DeFi risk: oracle reference liquidity may be insufficient relative to the size of positions relying on it. A technically functioning oracle can therefore still become vulnerable when its underlying market is too shallow.
The week’s institutionalisation trend extended into tokenized equities and banking infrastructure. Coinbase introduced tokenized equity exposure on the Base network for eligible non-U.S. users, while major banks continued advancing tokenized-deposit settlement.
LayerZero also unveiled ATLAS, an institutional-oriented execution infrastructure. Its proposed economics allocate 75% of the designated fee pool to automated ZRO buy-and-burn mechanisms, contributing to a sharp rise in ZRO during the week. However, the economic impact remains forward-looking until the system is operational and generating sustainable fees.
HSBC and Standard Chartered completed the first live cross-border interbank transaction using tokenized deposits on SWIFT’s blockchain-based ledger. The ledger coordinated payment obligations between the banks’ separate tokenized-deposit platforms, matching and netting claims before final settlement through existing systems. The transaction demonstrates the potential for interoperable, near 24/7 cross-border liquidity movement without requiring banks to replace their existing deposit infrastructure. However, SWIFT did not disclose the transaction’s value, currencies, corridor, or whether it represented routine production activity or a controlled live test.
For near-term price movements, we expect the market to follow two broad scenarios: a bullish continuation driven by sustained institutional inflows and supportive macro signals, or a bearish retracement should resistance levels fail and risk sentiment deteriorate.
The bullish case remains dominant if Bitcoin establishes sustained acceptance above $80,000, ETF inflows remain strong, and the Federal Reserve’s Jackson Hole communication is interpreted as supportive of easier monetary conditions.
Potential targets: BTC: $82,500–$85,000 | ETH: $2,750 following sustained acceptance above $2,500 | Altcoins: Continued rotation into large-cap Layer-1s and protocols with credible fee-capture mechanisms.
The bearish case would strengthen if BTC fails to hold the $80,000 breakout, ETF flows weaken, Treasury yields rise, or the Jackson Hole messaging is interpreted as hawkish. Further security incidents could also trigger renewed de-risking across DeFi and high-beta assets.
Potential levels: BTC: $74,000–$72,500 | ETH: $2,200–$2,300 | Altcoins: Increased profit-taking, particularly across high-beta DeFi and meme assets.
The week’s rally demonstrates that institutional liquidity and corporate treasury demand are becoming increasingly important drivers of digital-asset prices. However, the Cosmos and Morpho incidents provide an important counterweight: market adoption is advancing faster than infrastructure resilience in some parts of the ecosystem.
For the week ahead, the key variables are ETF flows, U.S. Treasury liquidity, Jackson Hole monetary-policy signals, institutional positioning, and protocol security. The market’s ability to sustain the current rally will ultimately depend on whether liquidity-driven momentum develops into broader, fundamental adoption.
