Midweek Market Review

Period: July 29 – August 05, 2026

The cryptocurrency market entered the early week of August 2026 consolidating within a narrow band as the total market capitalization hovers between $2.15 trillion and $2.19 trillion, weighed down by macroeconomic headwinds and a cautious market sentiment reflected in a Fear and Greed Index score of 38. Volatility expectations showed a mild change, although mixed, with Bitcoin (BTC) implied volatility at 36.49% and Ethereum (ETH) at 50.33%, reflecting low and neutral uncertainty around near-term price direction. BTC continues to lead, holding market dominance at 58.8%, followed by ETH at 10.3%, while other digital assets at 30.9%, highlighting continued investor preference for established crypto assets. Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) flows reflected a divergence in institutional positioning, with ETH products recording approximately $11.3 million net flows, signalling renewed interest in ETH exposure, whereas Bitcoin ETFs recorded negative net inflows of $373.3 million, suggesting short-term profit-taking and watchful positioning among market participants.

A central focus of recent market activity involves the firm formerly known as MicroStrategy, now named Strategy, which parted ways with 1,637 BTC to reduce its total holdings to 842,138 tokens. While this sale is modest compared to the company’s net year-to-date accumulation of roughly 174,895 tokens, Strategy reported an $8.32 billion loss on digital assets in its second-quarter disclosure due to selling tokens below purchase cost, establishing its average acquisition price of $66,384.56 per coin as the pivotal benchmark for corporate treasury profitability.

Strategy's Bitcoin Sale Signals a Shift in Corporate Treasury Management

One of the week’s most closely watched developments came from Strategy Inc. (NASDAQ: MSTR), whose latest BTC sale drew significant market attention despite having only a limited direct impact on price action. Given the relatively small volume involved, the transaction was insufficient to materially influence BTC’s supply-demand dynamics. However, it marked a symbolic departure from the company’s long-standing “never sell” philosophy and temporarily removed one of the market’s most consistent sources of corporate buying support. The announcement coincided with broader market weakness that saw BTC retreat toward the $62,500 level, although the decline was also driven by macroeconomic uncertainty, cautious institutional positioning, and derivatives market activity.

Beyond its market implications, the transaction highlights a broader evolution in corporate BTC treasury management. By selling BTC below its estimated average acquisition cost of approximately $75,419 per coin, Strategy demonstrated a pragmatic approach to balance sheet and liquidity management, prioritizing near-term funding requirements over maintaining an uncompromising buy-and-hold strategy. The move suggests that even the largest corporate BTC holder is increasingly willing to actively manage its digital asset reserves in response to evolving financial obligations.

Investor reaction was initially cautious. Strategy’s shares declined 4.34% to $93.32, reflecting concerns over continued equity dilution and the sustainability of its capital structure. However, sentiment improved after the company announced the repurchase of approximately $81.2 million of its STRC preferred stock, reinforcing confidence in its ability to meet fixed dividend commitments while strengthening financial flexibility. Taken together, the developments suggest that Strategy is shifting from an aggressive BTC accumulation strategy toward a more balanced capital allocation framework, one that seeks to preserve shareholder confidence while maintaining its position as the world’s largest corporate holder of BTC.

Concurrently, legislative efforts around the CLARITY Act have stalled in the Senate, with prediction market passage odds falling to roughly 31 percent, shifting institutional attention toward joint agency rulemaking under the SEC and CFTC’s Project Crypto initiative to establish token classification and self-custody frameworks.

Market attention has continued to shift from short-term price speculation towards broader structural themes, including institutional participation, regulatory developments, exchange resilience, blockchain adoption, and evolving geopolitical risks.

What Lies Ahead

BTC continues to trade tightly in the $62,500 to $65,000 range as derivative liquidations and macro uncertainty keep buyers restrained. In a bullish scenario, sustained net institutional ETF inflows exceeding $150 million daily could allow BTC to reclaim the $65,500 resistance level and target $66,700 to $68,000. Conversely, a bearish breakdown below the key $63,000 support level could trigger cascading liquidations of leveraged longs and push prices toward the $62,000 to $60,500 demand zone.

ETH remains anchored near the $1,850 to $1,910 support area while benefiting from steady institutional accumulation and validator expansion. Under a bullish scenario, a push above $1,950 could open the path toward $2,050 to $2,150 as treasury-staking demand builds, whereas a bearish decline below $1,850 could lead to a retest of $1,780 should broader risk-off pressures in the technology sector intensify.

Altcoins are experiencing noticeable divergence across major assets, with large-cap tokens like Solana, XRP, and Dogecoin enduring minor pullbacks while select Layer-1 protocols display localized strength. Should BTC dominance decline and capital rotates outward, high-beta altcoins could experience a bullish rally toward major overhead resistance zones, but should market liquidity shrink further, capital is expected to retreat into BTC and stablecoins, subjecting altcoins to an additional 8 to 15 percent drawback over the near-term.
